Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) Project

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) Project is a framework that is supported by the Texas Education Agency and Region 4 Education Service Center to promote and maximize academic achievement and behavioral competence.  It provides school-wide and class-wide strategies for helping all students achieve important social and learning goals to be critical thinkers, problem solvers and responsible and productive citizens. We know that when good behavior and good teaching come together, our students will excel in their learning – and become the Nation’s Best.  The schools in Aldine Independent School District are proud to be a part of this exciting project initiative.

The goal of PBIS is to enhance the capacity of schools to educate all students, especially students with challenging behaviors, by adopting a sustained, positive, preventative, and effective instructional approach to school-wide discipline and behavior management. This approach focuses on teaching and encouraging positive school-wide behavioral expectations and increasing school capacity to support sustained use of empirically validated practices.

The Campus-Based Model

The program development model in the Texas PBIS Project involves a campus-based team that leads their campus staff through the design and implementation of a comprehensive proactive school-wide discipline system tailored for their respective needs. Training and technical assistance providers work with an entire staff toward the goal of developing a positive and successful learning environment for “all” students. The model—

  • Is aligned with the national Multi-Tier Model of Positive Behavior Support developed through the PBS Technical Assistance Center at the University of Southern Florida (grant funded through the Office of Special Education Programs).
  • Is research based.
  • Involves a multiyear commitment from participating schools/districts.
  • Requires each campus to develop a PBIS leadership team.
  • Allows schools to move through the process at their own rate.
  • Is based on the successful development and implementation of positive behavior support systems and interventions for each tier of the model including—
    • Universal: School-wide.
    • Selected: Classroom and Small group.
    • Targeted: Individual student.
  • Requires schools to assess the “fidelity” of implementation based on the Benchmarks of Quality (BOQ).
  • Requires teams to systematically collect, summarize, and analyze data to drive the decision-making process and identify priorities.
  • Teaches and develops personal responsibility, appropriate social communication, and behavior skills among all members of the school community.
  • Develops a supportive learning environment for all students.
  • Is aligned with the Response to Intervention (RtI) model for behavior.
  • Builds capacity through a coaching model designed to develop the skills at a campus to gradually move from external trainers/coaches to self-maintenance and sustainability by their own personnel.
