PK & Kindergarten Questions
  1. What certification do I need to teach a particular grade or content area?
    Use the following link to access criteria and determine if your area of certification meets the requirements to teach in certain grade levels or content areas. (Texas Administrative Code §233)
  2. What staffing formulas will be used to determine how many PK and Kinder teachers will be needed?
    We will follow the same process we currently use. Staffing will be determined based on programs and grade level enrollment using enrollment from the previous year.
  3. If a teacher is moving, when will they be able to move into the new classroom?
    Teachers will be able to move into their new classrooms when the rooms are ready for occupancy. Principals will be notified of the timelines.
  4. Will kindergarten classrooms look like PK classrooms?
    Kindergarten classrooms will be similar to our current kindergarten classrooms.
  5. What hours will the EC/PK/K campuses follow?
    The teacher work day for 2016-2017 school year will be 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. There could be some adjustments to the time for the 2018-2019 school year.
  6. Will there still be Teachers College for kindergarten classes in PK/K schools? How will this impact the Montessori program?
    The district is committed to supporting and implementing both programs as we move into the 2018-2019 school year.
  7. Will teacher materials be moved?
    Yes, however we request that personal items be taken home during the move.
  8. How does the district plan to close the gap with 1st grade?
    Vertical discussions will continue to ensure student academic grow as they transition for one campus to another.
  9. Will the PK students be shuttle from the elementary schools?
    Our goal is not to shuttle students to an elementary school. The discussions are to transport students from their home directly to the EC/PK/K school.
  10. Will new boundaries be created?
    The district will need to re-zone and create new boundaries. Building capacity and creating better vertical alignment will be considered during this process.
  11. When will parents be informed about the boundary changes?
    Parents will be informed of the new boundaries during the spring semester of 2017.
  12. How many more EC/PK/K schools will be added?
    Currently, we have trend data that supports the addition of 4 new EC/PK/K schools.
  13. What if a PK teacher wants to teach kindergarten?
    Teachers will be able to interview for any positions they are interested in and are certified to teach. However, we will need PK teachers for our PK students. When staffing the buildings, we will consider the needs of the district as a whole.
  14. How many special education teachers will be available for kinder students at the EC/PK/K schools?
    The number of special education teachers will be projected based on boundary changes and caseloads. This is the same process we currently follow.
  15. ill entire teams be able to move to particular schools?
    All requests will be considered. However, it may not be possible for entire teams to be moved to the same location.
  16. Since deSantiago is implementing the new EC/PK/K structure, will there be additional schools added before 2018-2019?
    There will not be any additional schools utilizing the new reconfiguration until 2018-2019.
  17. Will we be keeping Headstart?
    Yes, the four Headstart campuses will keep the program. New Headstart programs will not be added to other campuses at this time.
  18. What are the new school locations?
    Once the school locations have been finalized, a map will be posted on the website for employee and public view.
  19. Will seniority be considered for those needing to transfer?
    The transfer and/or excess guidelines for the reconfiguration process have not been finalized. We anticipate there will be a need to modify our existing criteria.
  20. How will magnet or IB schools be affected?
    There will not be any changes to the magnet/IB programs in these schools.
  21. Will the reconfigured PK schools have bathrooms in every classroom?
    The goal is to have bathrooms in every PK classroom.
  22. Will teachers be able to take their technology such as Smart Boards?
    The technology will most likely remain at the current school. However, the district is creating a technology plan to ensure student and teacher technology needs are met.
Intermediate Questions
  1. If I have EC-6 certification will I have to teach 6th grade?
    Teachers will be able to interview for any positions they are interested in and are certified to teach.
  2. If my certification is 4-8, where do I go?

  3. What will happen to the music, art, and elective teachers?
    All teachers will have a job. Based on the vacancies, support teachers will have opportunities to interview or be placed at a campus.
  4. Will I be placed or will I have to interview?
    All employees affected by the reconfiguration process will have the option to be placed or interview for a position.
  5. Will the Special Education teacher to student ratio change?
    We review staffing ratios annually. Adjustments are recommended based on caseloads.
  6. Will the principal have a choice of where they go?
    The principals will have an opportunity to give input regarding their preferences.
  7. What will happen when there are two elementary schools next to each other?
    Current discussions are underway to develop enrollment plans for elementary schools that are in close proximity.
  8. Will there be 2 counselors at each elementary school?
    Staffing ratios are discussed annually to determine campus needs based on student enrollment.
  9. How can we add 6th grade to Teague if they are already overloaded?
    The district will need to re-zone and create new boundaries. Campus capacity and maintaining a vertical alignment will be considered during these discussions.
  10. What will happen to the support staff such as RtI, Skills?
    All teachers will have a job. Based on the vacancies, support teachers will have opportunities to interview or be placed at a campus.
  11. Will 6th grade teachers moving to middle school be eligible for the math & science stipends?
    Consideration for 6th grade math and science stipends will be part of the discussions as we finalize the reconfiguration plans.
  12. What will be the process for placing or interviewing for a position?
    The transfer and/or excess guidelines for the reconfiguration process have not been finalized. We anticipate there will be a need to modify our existing criteria. There are discussions to have a transfer fair specifically for intermediate school employees.
  13. Can I move to a middle school if I have EC-6 certification?

  14. Will we get Wi-Fi in schools?
    The district has a technology plan that will provide Wi-Fi access in all the schools.
  15. If I am at an elementary school now, will I automatically stay here and teach 5th grade?
    All employees will have an opportunity to give input regarding their preferences.
  16. Will I be allowed to follow my principal?
    Based on the vacancies, employees will have opportunities to interview at a campus.
  17. What will happen to a special education teacher who teaches 5th and 6th grade?
    All teachers will have a job. Based on the vacancies, all teachers will have opportunities to interview or be placed at a campus.
  18. Will I have to relocate to another school?
    The district will make efforts to accommodate employee requests. However, some employees will relocate to other campuses. All employees will have a job.
  19. How many music teachers will there be on each elementary, middle, and high school campus?
    Staffing ratios are discussed annually to determine campus needs based on student enrollment.
  20. Will the open courtyards on campuses be enclosed?
    There are no plans to enclose the open courtyards.
  21. Can we move as an interdisciplinary team?
    All requests will be considered. However, it may not be possible for entire teams to be moved to the same location.
  22. Will we add another testing coordinator?
    Staffing ratios are discussed annually to determine campus needs based on student enrollment.
  23. Will UIL apply to 6th grade sports?
    UIL rules begin at 7th grade.
  24. If I stay at my current campus, do I have to re-interview?
    The transfer and/or excess guidelines for the reconfiguration process have not been finalized. We anticipate there will be a need to modify our existing criteria.
  25. Will new boundaries be created?
