On Thursday, Feb. 7, more than 400 people attended a celebration of generations at Mendel Elementary School to say good-bye to the school, which was closed after Hurricane Harvey, after 63 years of service to the Aldine ISD and Mendel community. Aldine ISD Superintendent Dr. Wanda Bamberg and Board of Trustees President Steve Mead posed with four relatives of Ernest F. Mendel, for whom the school was named in his honor in 1954. Many current and former students and staff attended the event. Current Mendel principal Karen Wilkerson delivered opening remarks, which included a Power Point presentation of events and happenings at the school over the last 63 years. Mr. Mead served as the keynote speaker for the event. Following Mr. Mead's remarks, the Mendel first- and second-grade choir performed four songs. Following their performances, former Mendel principals Raymond Stubblefield and Jamie DeGeorge delivered remarks and remembrances during their tenures as Mendel principals. A flag ceremony was then performed by the Mendel Girl Scouts, which was followed by closing remarks from Dr. Bamberg.
