Leading With Passion, MacArthur Band Director James Debose Hits all the Right Notes While Building a Musical Powerhouse

MacArthur high school has been called home to some phenomenal band directors in its program’s history. Grammy Nominated Music Educator Jose Antonio Diaz once led the way for the award-winning band. Still, under James Debose, the Jammin Generals hasn’t missed a beat, winning awards, and competitions, showcasing the talented musicians for MacArthur while representing Aldine ISD. 

Hailing from a military background, James’s upbringing took him on a captivating journey through Texas, Georgia, and Hawaii, which greatly influenced his musical styles. His exposure to diverse cultures and vibrant music scenes nurtured his love for a wide range of genres, spanning from classical music to the magic of jazz and the soulful rhythms of gospel. 

Through his passion and dedication, he uses music as a medium to connect and teach life skills to his students, instilling in them the belief that young people are capable of accomplishing anything. The remarkable achievements of the past year serve as a testament to his unwavering commitment. 

“During my time as a student teacher at Dekaney high school, those students opened my eyes to how incredible education can be. That is when I found something that I loved more than music, and that was teaching kids.”

The Award-Winning Jammin’ Generals have triumphed in numerous competitions throughout the 2022-2023 season. Their accomplishments include 6 Region Level Jazz Students, 2 Area Level Jazz Students, 2 Region Level Orchestra Students, 5 District Level Band Students, 2 Freshman Region Level Band Students, 8 Region Level Band Students, and 1 Area Level Band Student. Moreover, an astounding 9 State Level Students advanced and medaled at the prestigious Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest. The Winter Guard received Superior Ratings at three separate contests, while the Indoor Drumline secured a remarkable 3rd place at the Texas Color Guard Circuit Contest and 1st place at the Aldine ISD Percussion Festival. Notably, the Jazz Ensemble’s incredible talent shone through with a 1st place finish at the Harlem Hell Fighter Jazz Festival and a 3rd place finish at the Sam Houston State University Jazz Festival. Under the guidance of Director James Debose, these achievements demonstrate the limitless potential of his students and their unwavering commitment to excellence in music.

“Young people are capable of anything you put in front of them. It’s incredible how much they accomplish as long as you’re able to provide the resources and opportunities.” said Debose when asked about what he’s learned about himself as a director and teacher. Debose also credits the Diaz Music Institute for the outstanding support and resources they have provided. 

Over the past couple of years, Debose has been able to understand the impact of being kind, as he believes that he is fortunate to work with students from different backgrounds but creating that connection based on kindness helps establish the relationship that he can hold his students to high expectations. 

James Debose’s lasting message to his students is “be bold, and be unapologetic about striving towards your goals and do not allow anyone to tell you your goals are out of reach and tell you that you are unworthy.”
