Aldine ISD Partners With the University of Houston-Downtown to Kickoff Bilingual E-Library

On Friday, Nov. 10, Aldine ISD’s Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Department, in partnership with the University of Houston Downtown, held its Bilingual E-Library kick off event at the UHD campus.

Earlier this year, UHD was awarded a two-year grant of $2.5 million by the U.S. Department of Commerce to upgrade its bilingual e-library and improve the connectivity and literacy of Houston’s Hispanic community. It was through this grant that UHD sought to partner with AISD and utilize its resources for the Aldine community.

Aldine ISD’s Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney attended the event and spoke on the importance of the partnership. 

“Through the power of collaboration and education, we believe that literacy is the key that unlocks limitless possibilities,” Dr. Goffney said.

Families (240 participants) from Black and Bussey elementary schools will pilot the program in this partnership with the goal of improving family literacy by reading and writing stories together. From here, five additional campuses will be participating in the program. Both Griggs and Hinojosa primary schools, along with Marcella, Smith and Hill elementary schools will all be included next spring.  

A feature of the e-library is a YouTube channel that will offer professional development in literacy and reading comprehension, to both Aldine ISD’s in-service bilingual teachers and UHD’s pre-service teachers. The event closed out with a performance by Mariachi Acero from Carver High school and Ballet Folklorico Ketzally.
