Drew Academy Student Wins Aldine ISD District Spelling Bee, Advances to Regionals

After 11 intense rounds of competition, Chandler Coleman, an eighth grader from Drew Academy, claimed victory at the 2025 Aldine ISD District Spelling Bee earlier in February. Chandler secured the championship by correctly spelling “accolade” and will now represent the district at the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on March 22.

The annual competition brought together top spellers from across Aldine ISD, with 38 campuses — 30 elementary schools and eight middle schools — participating.

Teague Middle School eighth-grader Taylyn Ned finished as the runner-up, demonstrating strong spelling skills throughout the event. Fifth grader Aleisa Gutiérrez from Stehlik Elementary School also made an impressive showing as the last remaining elementary student in the competition.

“Congratulations to all of our participants for their hard work and dedication,” said Judarrah Hawkins, Aldine ISD program director of elementary language arts. “We are so proud of our spellers and can’t wait to cheer Chandler on at Regionals!”

Hawlins thanks the volunteers, parents, campus coordinators, administrators, and M.O. Campbell Educational Center staff for making this year’s Spelling Bee a success, stating “their support means everything.”

Houston Community College will host the 2025 Scripps Regional Spelling Bee in March. The Houston area bee winner will then travel to Washington, DC, to compete for the national championship in late May.
