On Tuesday, Feb. 17, the Aldine Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the closure of Teague Middle School and Houston Academy at the conclusion of the 2025-26 school year. The decision will allow the district to maximize the use of its highest-quality facilities while continuing to provide students with the best educational experiences.

Over the past several years, Aldine ISD has faced declining enrollment, limited affordable housing, lower birth rates and reduced state funding. The district lost 4,000 students last year alone, and enrollment has declined by 26 percent over the past decade. Despite these challenges, the district’s commitment to ensuring every student graduates with choices and opportunities remains unchanged.

“We understand that changes like this can be difficult for our students, families, staff, and the community,” said Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney. “These decisions were not made lightly. They came after careful review of data and community feedback. Our goal is to use our resources wisely while continuing to provide a rigorous and enriching education.”

Students impacted by the closures will be rezoned to the following campuses for the 2026-27 school year:

  • Teague Middle School – Aldine Middle School, Jones Middle School, and Mead Middle School
  • Houston Academy – Fifth-grade students will attend Anderson Academy; sixth-grade students will attend Drew Academy

The decision was based on facility use and condition, financial data, family choice trends and academic outcomes. Prior to the vote, the district held community meetings where parents, staff and community members asked questions, reviewed information and provided feedback.

District leaders emphasized that campus optimization is an ongoing annual review process designed to address budget challenges and ensure long-term sustainability. The district does not anticipate staff reductions and will work to place affected employees at other campuses.

“Our students and staff are what matter most in Aldine,” Goffney said. “These decisions allow us to retain our dedicated teachers and staff and provide the best possible learning environments for our students. Most importantly, we are committed to supporting every student and staff member through this transition and ensuring Aldine remains a strong, supportive community.”

Aldine ISD will work with campus leaders to ensure a smooth transition for students and staff in the upcoming school year. Community meetings about the closures will be held Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 5:30 p.m. at Houston Academy, 8103 Carver Road, Houston, TX 77088, and at 6 p.m. at Teague Middle School, 21700 Rayford Road, Houston, TX 77338. More information about the district’s optimization plan is available at aldineisd.org/optimization.
