Griggs Primary School Celebrates International Dot Day

Griggs Primary School students celebrated International Dot Day, a global event inspired by the children’s book, “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds. The day encourages students to embrace creativity, courage and collaboration.

“The goal is to promote literacy, but also to promote creativity,” said Information Literacy Specialist Kara Cooper. “And for each student to take their own uniqueness and run with it and make their own mark on the world.”

Students Make Their Mark

To celebrate, students tapped into their creative side at arts-and-crafts tables inside the library. They colored fall leaves, used magic water paints and made their own Dot Day headbands. Students and staff were also encouraged to wear their most spirited dot-themed attire.

Storytime

Aldine ISD Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney and other district leaders participated in the festivities by visiting classrooms and reading “The Dot” aloud to students.

“The Dot” tells the story of a young girl who builds the confidence and courage to overcome her self-doubt and “make her mark” as an artist. After the teacher Terry Shay introduced the book to his students in 2009, International Dot Day spread from classroom to classroom, becoming a globally recognized observance where students and adults alike set aside their insecurities and embrace their innate ability to create and inspire.

This year, Sept. 15 marked the fifth annual International Dot Day celebration at Griggs EC/PK/K School.
