Merlin GriggsThe Aldine ISD Board of Trustees intends to seek applications to select a new board member by appointment to fill the vacancy created by the passing of Board Member, Merlin D. Griggs.

Applications for the previous vacancy after the resignation of former Board Member, Rick Ogden, will be automatically considered for the new vacancy as well. The Board Selection Committee will provide an update at the upcoming board meeting on Tuesday, January 10, 2017.

The deadline will be set for Friday, January 13 at 3:00 pm.

There are several legal qualifications for a local school board candidate. To be appointed, the candidate must be a qualified voter in the Aldine Independent School District. Prior to the appointment, the candidate must have been a resident of the district for the preceding six (6) months and have been a resident of the state for the preceding twelve (12) months. Current Aldine ISD employees are eligible; however, upon appointment or election, the employee must resign from employment with the district.

A candidate screening committee consisting of current Board of Trustees members is looking for a service-minded individual willing to serve the students, community and taxpayers of Aldine. There is no pay or honorarium for the work, but the rewards are many as board members are responsible for the governance of the district. Serving on the Aldine ISD Board of Trustees requires a significant time commitment. Board members attend monthly study sessions and business meetings and also take part in numerous training sessions through the Gulf Coast School Board Association, Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), and other organizations.

In addition, Board members actively participate in school, community and civic events and celebrations.

Copies of the application to be considered for appointment to the Aldine ISD Board of Trustees may be obtained in person at the office of Assistant Superintendent of Community and Governmental Relations Abel Garza, 2520 W.W. Thorne Blvd., Houston, TX, 77073, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. You may also download the application here. Applicants must provide a resume, including their history of advocacy and community service. Completed applications must be delivered to Mr. Garza’s office by 3 p.m. on Jan. 13, 2017.

The board selection committee will screen and interview qualified applicants. Finalists will then interview with the full Aldine ISD Board of Trustees. The Board anticipates naming Mr. Griggs’ replacement who would be sworn in for service during the regularly scheduled Board meeting on Feb. 14, 2017.
