Aldine ISD to return to charging for lunches on Nov. 14
Posted on 11/11/2016

In 2014, Aldine ISD’s Child Nutrition Services Department (CNS) adopted the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which eliminated the requirement of completing a meal application for free/reduced price lunch for its students. For the last two years, all students in Aldine ISD received free breakfast and lunch based on school eligibility and student data.

Two years of operating under CEP has not proved to be financially sustainable for the district and the CNS department. In addition, over the last two years since implementing CEP, the number of eligible schools has also declined.

At the May 17 Board of Trustees meeting, Aldine ISD Trustees voted to eliminate CEP and return to meal applications for its students. Students who qualify for free or reduced meals will receive free or reduced lunch throughout the 2016-17 school year. Beginning on Monday, Nov. 14, students who do not qualify for free or reduced meals will have to pay for lunch.

Lunch prices are as follows:

  • EC/Pre-K through elementary students - $1.45
  • Intermediate through secondary students - $1.70

To assist with the transition back to meal applications, Aldine ISD covered the cost for all students for the first 30 days of the 2016-17 school year.

Below is a list of the meal programs that will remain free for students during the 2016-17 school year:

  • Breakfast
  • After school care program – elementary and intermediate students
  • Evening meal program – middle and high school students
  • Summer meals – all students
