Reece Academy Hosts Balloon Launch for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The students and staff members at Reece Academy raised breast cancer awareness during the month of October. Recently, staff members released pink balloons to recognize loved ones affected by cancer. Each year, Principal Sherrie Batro along with staff members Billie Joseph and Jacqueline Toliver organize the schoolwide event.
According to the American Cancer Society, approximately more than 230,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women in the United States have been recorded for 2013. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer during her life is about 1 in 8. Breast cancer mortality rates have been going down over the years. This is probably the result of finding the cancer earlier and better treatment. Currently, there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
