MacArthur High 2003 Graduate Highlighted in Houston Chronicle

Reader Jessica Fuentes nominated Juan Antonio Sorto, a 2003 graduate of MacArthur High School, for [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Houstonian of the Year. The Houston Chronicle asked readers to nominate someone who had made Houston a better place for others in 2013. The [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Chronicle had also featured him when he signed up for volunteer work feeding the homeless while visiting Washington, D.C., in January 2013 to attend his first presidential inauguration.

Sorto first volunteered at Star of Hope while in high school to acquire community service hours and discovered his life’s mission.

Sorto is currently working on his doctoral degree in urban planning at Texas Southern University where he also obtained his master’s in public administration. He received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Houston-Downtown.

Sorto is a probation officer for Harris County Community Supervision and Corrections Department and actively volunteers with the Star of Hope Women and Family Emergency Shelter.
