Tina Perry, Dr. Emily Bartley Named AISD’s Top Teachers

Tina Perry was named Aldine ISD’s Elementary/Intermediate Teacher of the Year, while Dr. Emily Bartley was named the district’s Secondary Teacher of the Year during AISD’s annual Teacher of the Year Breakfast held Friday, March 7 at the Hyatt North Houston Hotel.

Perry teaches at Lane Center, while Dr. Bartley teaches at Aldine High School.

The other four finalists were Kimberly Johnson of Calvert Elementary School, Debra Dunham of Stehlik Intermediate School, Roshunda Jones of Carver High School and Dr. Olivia Chapa of Victory Early College High School. In addition to being honored by a number of North Houston/Greenspoint area, the four finalists and campus teachers of the year were awarded prize checks from, the Aldine Education Foundation provided checks to honor the two winners, the four finalists and the campus teachers of the year.

Perry and Dr. Bartley each received a $5,000 check from the foundation, while Johnson, Dunham, Jones and Dr. Chapa each received a $1,000 check. Each campus teacher of the year received a $100 bill from the foundation.

Former AISD Superintendent Nadine Kujawa, who serves on the foundation’s board was happy to honor Aldine teachers who play such a vital role in educating students.

“The Foundation thanks you for your commitment and dedication to the children of Aldine,” Mrs. Kujawa said. “We are happy to be able to give something back to a group of people who do so much for our children.”

Superintendent Dr. Wanda Bamberg thanked the foundation for the generosity it showed to AISD’s teachers.

“We want to thank the foundation for taking this celebration to a grander level. I also want to recognize our outstanding teachers for the great work you do every day with our students.”

In addition to receiving checks, Perry and Dr. Bartley each received two first-class round trip tickets from United Airlines to travel to any destination within the 48 continuous United States, Alaska, Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean. The two also received a $200 check from InvesTex Credit Union, a $100 Macy’s gift card from Greenspoint Mall, a weekend night’s stay for two with breakfast at the DoubleTree Houston Intercontinental Hotel, and an Android tablet with case from UBI-Comp.

The four finalists received a $50 Macy’s gift card from Greenspoint Mall, a gift card for a lunch buffet for two at the DoubleTree Intercontinental Airport Hotel, a prize pack from the Houston Rockets that included two tickets to an upcoming game, and an Android tablet with case from UBI-Comp.

In addition to the $100 bill from the foundation, each campus teacher of the year received an insulated lunch bag from the East Aldine District.
A drawing was held to give away a one weekend night’s stay in a deluxe room, including breakfast for two, at the Sheraton North Houston Hotel. Prior to the announcement of the two winners, each campus principal introduced their teacher of the year and a video profiling the six finalists was played.

Joining Dr. Bamberg and her cabinet at the event were AISD Board President Steve Mead, Vice-President Dr. Viola M. Garcia, Assistant Secretary Rose Avalos and Members Rick Ogden and Merlin Griggs.

The Teacher of the Year Committee was chaired by Margarita Byrum and co-chaired by Keena Sims-Bradley. Committee members were Machelle Brown (Nimitz Vertical), Divina Browne (Carver/Eisenhower Vertical), Sandra Gongora (Aldine Vertical), Kathleen Flores (2013 Elementary/Intermediate Teacher of the Year and MacArthur Vertical), Eva Lanczos (2013 Secondary Teacher of the Year and MacArthur Vertical), and Maria Galvan (community member).
