Carver High’s “Porgy” UIL One-Act Play Wins District 18-5A Title

The Carver High School theater students did it again. For a fourth consecutive year, the Carver High drama students hold the title of District 18-5A UIL One-Act Play champions after competing in the second round of competition held March 29 at Alief Elsik High School. The troupe won with their performance of “Porgy,” the play adaptation of the Gershwin musical “Porgy and Bess.”

The troupe competed March 20 and March 29 against nine other high schools from the Aldine ISD (Davis High School also advanced to the second round of District 18-5A UIL competition.) and Alief school districts.

Carver High along with Alief Taylor advanced to compete at the Area Competition set for Wednesday, April 9. The contest will be held at San Jacinto College Central in the Richard S. Slocomb Fine Arts Building Auditorium 8060 Spencer Highway (Pasadena 77505). The competition starts at 2:00 p.m. with Carver High scheduled as the third school to perform in the competition.

Folks who would like to support the Carver High students by attending their performance are asked to arrive around 3:30 p.m., prior to the start of the play. Once the play has commenced, no one will be permitted to enter. The cost of admission is $10.
