Houston Academy’s Science Club Visits Natural Bridge Caverns

Several Houston Academy Science Club student members went on a field trip to Natural Bridge Caverns. The students had the opportunity to see amazing formations below the Earth’s surface. The field trip helped students connect what they had learned about how landforms develop.

The Natural Bridge Caverns near San Antonio formed more than 1,000 years ago. Water seeping through cracks in the ground mixed with carbon dioxide. This caused chemical weathering to the limestone below the surface.

The students journeyed 280 feet underground to see many formations. The students saw stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, cave bacon, and much more.

Several staff members also joined students on the field trip. Rachelle Novara, Aurick Smither, Mark Mitchell, assistant principal at the campus; Tamara Fleming, Raquel Longoria and Elisa Gutiérrez served as chaperons.
