Students from five elementary, three intermediate and three high schools participated. They arrived at the M.O. Campbell Educational Center wearing their school t-shirts and banners.
The carrying of the Olympic torch in the center’s arena kicked off the opening ceremonies.
The schools had groups of 12-team members and a teacher. The Olympic-style event had students compete in jump rope, push-ups, a breakfast quiz bowl and more. Winning students received prizes within their grade levels. The schools also received a trophy to display at the campuses.
Dani Sheffield, executive director of child nutrition services, sees the event as a way to reward the schools. Each of the participating schools showed the highest percentage increase in breakfast consumption.
“We designed the event to reward schools for promoting breakfast,” said Sheffield. “The schools have worked hard to raise awareness about the importance of eating a healthy breakfast.”
Sheffield also reminds parents that starting in August, schools will be serving up breakfast and lunch free of charge to all students, regardless of their parents’ income.
Aldine ISD qualified for the free meal program under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. AISD already offered free breakfast to all students. The free lunch is being made possible through a federal program with the USDA. The department identified Aldine ISD as an eligible district.
Parents and legal guardians will no longer have to fill out an application for free/reduced meals.
