Aldine Ninth Grade School Remembers 9/11 With Art Project

Students in Peggy Dry and Jennifer Jesse’s Art 1 classes created a community art project in memory of the events of September 11, 2001.

The ninth graders were too young to remember the event. Dry and Jesse had students view actual news footage from New York and the national networks. They also read about the tragic events of 9/11. The teachers also encouraged students to discuss what 9/11 meant to them.

After learning about 9/11, each student created art within a small square. They created artworks that depicted what 9/11 meant to them or were the lessons learned from it. More than 250 students hung their piece on the wall mosaic in the school’s cafeteria.

Dry felt the project helped students remember 9/11.

“For them, it is a moment in history much like Pearl Harbor or the Assassination of John F. Kennedy. We hoped this project would help them think critically about how 9/11 affected people’s lives and history. Now they are aware of the impact this event had and can pass that knowledge on to others.”
