MacArthur High School Jazz Ensemble Performs at HCDE to Welcome County Superintendent James Colbert

The Harris County Department of Education (HCDE) invited the Jazz Ensemble from MacArthur High School to perform. The students played Nov. 18 at the community reception for James Colbert Jr.

Colbert is the new HCDE county school superintendent.

The MacArthur Jazz Ensemble played to a packed house. Community members, local organizations and leaders from local school districts attended the event.

The native from Washington, D.C., began his career in education at Pflugerville ISD. He started as a special education teacher and advanced to serve as an assistant high school principal. He later moved to Dallas ISD to serve as a high school principal.

Since 2011, Colbert has been superintendent of West-Cove CISD. He also worked as assistant superintendent at Hamilton County Department of Education in Tennessee.

Colbert feels honored to serve in his new role.

“It is both an honor and a privilege for me to join this 125-year-old public education entity,” said Colbert. “It plays such a vital role in the 25 Harris County school districts. I look forward to meeting and working with my colleagues in every school district throughout Harris County. Together we can build a community of champions for students. “
