Hambrick Middle School Choir Students Make Strong Showing at State

The Hambrick Middle School choirs recently competed in the State University Interscholastic League (UIL) Concert and Sight Reading Contest.

The contest gives middle and high school music programs the opportunity show off their abilities to sight-read music at a moments notice throughout the competition. They also perform selected numbers for judges.

In this rigorous contest, choirs must sing three prepared songs. Two of the songs must be from the Prescribed Music List.

They must also show they have the musical chops to sing without much preparation. The judges give students a brand new piece of music. The young singers have six minutes to prepare. Students are not permitted to sing the piece aloud until the conclusion of the six-minute study period. After receiving only their starting pitches, the students sing the new piece of music. The judges rate the singers on their accuracy and musicianship.

All four the school’s choirs performed well at the UIL state event.

Superior Rating (highest rating): Women’s Performance Choir

Excellent Rating: Intermediate Women’s Choir & Show Choir Men

Average Rating: 8th Grade Women’s Choir
