The project hits close to home. Several Grantham students have Type 1 diabetes.

The Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes is an educational, in-school fundraising program. It educates students about Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. It also provides them with an opportunity to make a difference by raising money for type 1 diabetes research.

The foundation recognizes the campus with a thank you banner and the students with awards. The campus will receive 10 percent of the total amount of money raised. The school can use the money to buy equipment, books, field trips, or anything else your school may need. The program focuses on kids helping kids.

The school thanks H-E-B Store #308 (at Aldine-Westfield Rd. and Hirschfield Rd.) for providing fruit and water to participants at the walk. Store manager Chavel Melchor is a Grantham Academy business partner.

Sebrina Shields-Taylor felt that taking part in the program helped increase students’ awareness. Shields-Taylor serves as lead counselor at the campus.

Not only did the students learn about type 1 and type 2 diabetes,” Shields-Taylor said. “But they also raised money for research. And they helped make a difference. All the students had a great time taking part in Kids Walk for a Cure.
