Texas Department of Agriculture recognizes Aldine ISD for success in local products challenge

The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) and Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller honored the Aldine ISD Child Nutrition Department with a Perfect Peach Award for its achievement in TDA’s 2015 Local Products Challenge. Participating schools that accepted Commissioner Miller’s challenge and incorporated local ingredients from Texas in at least three meal components – dairy, protein, fruits, vegetables, or grains – earned the Perfect Peach Award.

“Teaching children about healthy lifestyles by introducing them to nutritious foods grown in Texas is a top priority at TDA,” Commissioner Miller said. “When our school nutrition partners participate in the Local Products Challenge, they strengthen Texas agriculture and demonstrate their commitment to developing good nutritional habits for the young Texans they serve and their entire communities.”

Participation in TDA’s Local Products Challenge continues to grow year after year. More than 90 school districts participated in the 2015 Local Products Challenge, and only 65 of those earned a Perfect Peach Award.

“Our child nutrition team works tirelessly throughout the year to prepare healthy school meals and support our students’ academic goals,” said Aldine ISD Superintendent Dr. Wanda Bamberg. “The Perfect Peach Award highlights their efforts to serve local Texas products in the cafeteria to help make our district a leader in nutrition for the Lone Star State.”
