Carver High School, Kujawa Elementary School Students Win National Magnet School Poster Contest

The national initiative highlights and promotes magnet schools across the country.

Magnet Schools of America sponsored the 10th Annual National Student Poster Contest. It is part of the celebration of National Magnet School Month in February.

This year students had the option to express or interpret one of the magnet school pillars or all five.

Magnet School Pillars

Students compete in one of three levels: elementary, middle and high school level. Online voting took place during National Magnet School Month. Voters selected the top five posters from each level that best addressed the criteria. Students had to adhere to theme as well as provide a clear and concise message. They also voted on originality and organization as well as the use of color and design.

[icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Magnet Schools of America recently announced the winners at the organization’s national conference. The event took place in Miami on May 7-9.

Estefany Ramírez-González won first place in the elementary level. The fourth grade student attends [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Kujawa Elementary School. Estefany’s teacher is Kelly Patterson. In 2015, [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]John Duong Kujawa Elementary won second place. The Kujawa EC/PK Center also had a student place. [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Dream Henderson won second place in 2014.

The Kujawa Education Center is [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]2016 MSA School of Distinction Award recipient. [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Kujawa is an [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]International Baccalaureate World School. The campus offers the IB Primary Years Program.

La’Jasha Champion from [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Carver High School also won. The sophomore student took first place in the high school division. Matthew Kirkpatrick is La’Jasha’s art teacher.

Both Patterson and Kirkpatrick are proud of their students.

“Estefany worked hard on her poster for a month,” said Patterson. “She was always willing to give up her recess to spend more time perfecting her piece.”

“I couldn’t be happier for La’Jasha,” said Kirkpatrick. “I feel fortunate to work with her and other Carver students. They continue to push the envelope with their achievements.”

Carver High School made [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]U.S. News & World Report‘s Best High Schools in the U.S. rankings. [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Carver, a magnet school, focuses on engineering, applied technology and the arts.
