Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Announces Aldine ISD 2017 School Art Contest Winners
The District had more than 630 outstanding works from students in each school level (PK-12).

[dropcap color=”#888″ type=”square”]T[/dropcap]he [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Houston Rodeo starts March 7, but Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) folks are busy. The Show’s School Art Committee recently visited Aldine ISD to judge students’ works.
In January, schools participating in the HLSR School Art Program host district-level competitions. The Show’s School Art Committee visits districts in the Houston area to judge. Students can compete in five categories: colored drawing, mixed media, monochromatic drawing, painting and 3-D.

Each entry receives a red, white or blue ribbon. Judges take a deeper look at blue ribbon winners. It is from this group that they select the Best of Show, Gold Medal and Special Merit awards. Judges select winners in elementary, junior high and high school levels. All work by high school participants is eligible for the Show’s School Art Auction.
Aldine ISD students once again showed off their skills and talent. Prekindergarten students to high school seniors created thousands of western-themed artworks. More than 630 artworks placed in the HLSR District Contest held this month.
For more than 50 years, the Show has been supporting youth and art education.

This marks the 47th year that District students take part in the HLSR program.
The HLSR School Art Committee selected eight AISD students to advance to the Show in March. Some works will form part of the Hayloft Gallery exhibit. The high school winners will compete with others across the area in the Auction. They will vie for scholarships.
Dr. Michaelann Kelley lauds the students’ works and their art educators. Kelley is program director of fine arts.
“I am so proud of all our visual art students,” said Kelley. “The vice–chair of the Rodeo‘s School Arts Committee visited our District. He loved the show. I received many positive comments from judges. They praised the outstanding artworks and gushed about our talented students.
“I also laud our the awesome art teachers we have in Aldine.”
Just how impressed were the judges? One example is the Gold Medal winner in the Elementary Level. The judges could not believe that second grade student Ja’Varie Sparks-Thomas from Kujawa Elementary School had created the artwork titled “Dinner? … I Dare You.” According to Kelley, the judges were simply in awe of the skill that Ja’Varie has developed at such a young age.
The District’s HLSR School Art Reception took place on Jan. 12. The District invited the community to attend the event held at the M.O. Campbell Educational Center. The reception also served to showcase the award-winning artworks of students across the District.
“This was the first year we held the reception to honor District winners,” said Kelley. “We had more than 500 students, parents and educators attend the event. It was wonderful to see everyone encourage our students and support the arts program in Aldine.
“I am grateful to everyone involved who pulled off this grand show!“

This competition came full circle for one educator at Anderson Academy. Tony McMillian won the Best of Show award 29 years ago when he was a student. This year, one of his students earned recognition. That young artist is Alalyn Hoang who took home Best of Show in the Elementary Level.
In March, Rodeo attendees will be able to view the Best of Show, Gold Medal and Special Merit artworks from AISD. In the past, the art exhibition has taken place at the Hayloft Gallery located in the NRG Park complex.
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will hold an Awards Ceremony in March (date to TBA) at NRG. The event will recognize high school winners.
