Aldine ISD Middle and High School Students Earn 37 Honors in 2017 Regional Scholastic Art Awards

Plan to attend one of several events planned in March to honor and showcase the region’s talented youth.

[dropcap color=”#888″ type=”square”]S[/dropcap]ince 1923, the Scholastic Awards have recognized the vision and talent of our nation’s youth. Alumni of the Awards include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Stephen King, Robert Redford and Ken Burns.

The Harris County Department of Education sponsors the regional contest. Teen artists and writers from 18 area school districts and multiple charter, private and home schools in Harris County earned regional Scholastic Art & Writing honors. Students can compete in 29 art and writing categories.

Of the 8,748 art and writing regional entries, a total of 1,805 Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention awards. Judges will determine which Gold Key winners will advance to the national contest. Regional Gold Key work is currently being considered for national recognition in New York City. National Medalists will be announced on Tuesday, March 14.

Aldine ISD is proud to announce that 33 students received 37 regional Scholastic Art honors. 

The community will have a chance to celebrate the students’ achievements. HCDE invites the community to upcoming events celebrating regional Scholastic Art and Writing Gold and Silver Key Award recipients.

Awards alumni use their creativity to become successful in any number of ways. Alumni are leaders in many fields including journalism, medicine and finance. They also work in government and public service, the law, science and design.

The Scholastic Awards have established an amazing track record. Alumni include artists Andy Warhol, Philip Pearlstein, Cy Twombly, Robert Indiana, Kay WalkingStick and John Baldessari; writers Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Bernard Malamud, Myla Goldberg and Joyce Carol Oates; photographer Richard Avedon; actors Frances Farmer, Robert Redford, Alan Arkin, Lena Dunham and John Lithgow; fashion designer Zac Posen; and filmmakers Stan Brakhage, Ken Burns and Richard Linklater.

At the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall, the Scholastic Awards will honor hundreds of students and their educators with a star-studded ceremony. Recent special guests include Tim Gunn, Alec Baldwin, Sonia Manzano, Billy Collins, Whoopi Goldberg and Sarah Jessica Parker.

“The Origins of Color” by Freddy Díaz

The 2017 National Ceremony of the Scholastic Art and Writing awards is June 8, 2017.

The Art.Write.Now.2017 National Exhibition will feature the most creative visual art and literary works by teens from across the country. Young artists and writers who have received the top honors in the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards will have their work displayed in New York City.

As part of the celebration, the Scholastic Awards will host the Student Showcase, which includes student talks, art-making workshops, open mic sessions and film screenings.
