Carver High School’s ‘Before It Hits Home’ One-Act Play Shines at UIL Area and Regional Contests

The theater students took on a play that dissects AIDS’ impact on black family.

[dropcap color=”#888″ type=”square”]C[/dropcap]arver High School recently competed at the UIL One-Act Play Area and Regional Competitions. The judges named the theater troupe’s one-act play a Region 2 State Alternate.

Cheryl L. West wrote Before It Hits Home in 1989.  It is one of the first plays to dramatize the African-American family dealing with AIDS. It symbolizes the life cycle — diagnosis and death — of the AIDS epidemic.

Once again, the magnet school students showed their acting chops at the competitions.

Over the past six years, Carver HS has advanced to regionals five times. The campus has received the State Alternate title three times.
