Aldine ISD Educators Receive SHABE Awards, 1 Advances to TABE Competition to Vie for Teacher of the Year Title

The organization supports individuals who educate students whose native language is not English.

The Suburban Association for Bilingual Education (SHABE) recently held its 16th annual Teacher of the Year Banquet. Two Aldine ISD teachers received honors as outstanding educators.

SHABE named Angela Painter from Oleson Elementary School as Aldine ISD’s ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher of the Year. Ana Aldrufeu-Madrazo from Stehlik Intermediate School earned the title of Aldine ISD’s Bilingual Teacher of the Year.

Aldrufeu-Madrazo received another distinction. She was also named the 2017 SHABE Bilingual Teacher of the Year. She will represent the SHABE district at the [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE) annual fall conference set for October 18-21 in McAllen, TX.

The state winner automatically becomes the TABE nominee for the National Association for Bilingual Education Teacher of the Year competition.

Campuses that participate in SHABE either select or nominate teachers. Each teacher of the year must then submit an application. From the submissions, the SHABE Selection Committee selects finalists who are interviewed and asked to submit student products. The Selection Committee selects winners for each district and the three top winners for SHABE: a Bilingual Teacher of the Year, an ESL Elementary Teacher of the Year, and an ESL Secondary Teacher of the Year.

SHABE was founded to support teachers, paraprofessional and administrators as they educate students whose native language is not English. The Association serves to review and disseminate the state of bilingual education in Texas. Additionally, SHABE members exchange data, studies, ideas, practices, and information with area school districts and educators.
