Aldine ISD Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Reception Set for January 11, 2018

More than 600 pieces of western-themed art from students in grades PreK-12 will be on display.

Hundreds of families, students and staff attended the 2017 Aldine ISD HLSR School Art Reception.

The District’s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) School Art Reception will take place on Jan. 11 from 6-8 p.m. at the M.O. Campbell Educational Center (1865 Aldine Bender Road).

Schools participating in the HLSR School Art Contest annually host district-level competitions. The Show’s School Art Committee visits districts in the Houston area to judge.

Each entry receives a red, white or blue ribbon. It is from the blue ribbon group that judges select the Best of Show, Gold Medal and Special Merit awards. Judges select winners in elementary, junior high and high school levels. All work by high school participants is eligible for the Show’s School Art Auction. The HLSR kicks off Feb. 27 at the NRG and ends Mar. 18.

Dr. Michaelann Kelley invites families, staff and community members to attend the reception. Kelley, director of visual arts, is hosting the event.

“I encourage everyone to come out to support our talented young artists,” Kelley said. “They created some wonderful western–themed artworks.“

Many will remember that last year Ja’Varie Sparks-Thomas‘ artwork advanced in the HLSR School Art Contest. He was named the 2017 Elementary Class Champion. His work sold at auction for $47,000.

HLSR will hold an Awards Ceremony in March at NRG.
