Aldine ISD Student Receives Coveted Scholarship to Attend Summer High School Studio Art Intensive

Established local and national artists will lead projects. The program will culminate in an exhibition.

Art League Houston’s Summer High School Studio Art Intensive only admits 16 students. Among them this year is an Aldine ISD student. Sophomore Barbara Villarreal from Carver High School Engineering, Applied Technology and the Arts is the lucky young artist.

The Reed Foundation awarded Art League Houston a grant to support the 2018 program. As a result, ALH provided full tuition scholarships to all participating students.

The four-week summer program is a rigorous, in-depth studio art experience. Participants receive six hours of coursework each day. They work in a variety of mediums, beginning with drawing and painting and expanding to less traditional forms.

Established local and national artists and educators lead projects. These will go beyond techniques taught in high school art classes. Instructors will teach students practical skills necessary to develop as artists.

Besides studio classes, guest speakers — practicing artists, curators and arts administrators — will meet with participants throughout the program. They will share stories and provide insight into the art world.

Students will also spend two days visiting various art spaces and cultural institutions around Houston. They will gain insight into the local arts climate in Houston.

Each student will receive an individual portfolio session. This will help them prepare for portfolio reviews when applying to colleges and art schools.

The program will conclude with a final exhibition. It will be a celebration of the work produced to show friends, family and instructors.
