Art Project Encourages Families to Walk, Learn and Play on the Sidewalks Around Kujawa Elementary School

The Kester Avenue Magnet Parent’s Association’s (KAMPA) “Walk The K!” project created fun, creative play spaces around several Houston elementary school communities.

Kujawa Elementary School kicked off the new school year with “Walk The K!” project.

After learning of Hurricane Harvey’s devastation of South Texas in 2017, the KAMPA, with the help of KaBoom!, reached out to share the “Walk The K!” project with the South Texas community.

KAMPA and its partners selected Kujawa Elementary School as one of the campuses to reach out to. The “Walk The K!” installations will be at the campus Aug. 20 to Sep. 4. The project will then move to other Houston area schools for the rest of the 2018-2019 school year.

The sidewalk project launched earlier this year at Kester Elementary School in Sherman Oaks, CA. According to a press release, the Kester “Walk The K!” project was made possible by Let’s Play Everywhere LA, a citywide competition held by KaBOOM!, Let’s Play (an initiative by Dr Pepper Snapple Group) and the City of Los Angeles Mayor’s Office. The competition awarded grants to fund creative solutions that make play a way of life in everyday and unexpected places. KAMPA’s project brought 18 professional sidewalk artists. They highlighted sidewalks as a place to walk, exercise and play.

Since its successful project launch, KAMPA, along with its partners, has been reaching out to other schools to provide the “Walk The K!” installation.

Tara Rollins, information literacy specialist at Kujawa Elementary School (click here), coordinated with KAMPA. The project installation included a play set, which was shared from a KaBOOM! Play Everywhere Challenge from the LA Unified School District, 10 large banners and five small banners with action words. In the library, students could see artwork and read a bio of each of the participating artists.
