National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates a diverse group of people. They trace their roots to Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries in North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. 

Of the District’s nearly 70,000 students, more than 74 percent are Hispanic. They represent a number of Spanish-speaking countries.

By the numbers …

[ul class=”list list-search”] [li]There are more than 20 countries where Spanish is spoken.[/li] [li]Number of Spanish speakers worldwide soars to 572 million. From this figure, 477 million people are native speakers, according to a 2017 report from the Spanish government’s Cervantes Institute. [/li][/ul][ul class=”list list-search”] [li]Around 754 million people expected to speak language globally by 2060, report shows.[/li][/ul]

Several events and activities will take place throughout the City of Houston. For example, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston will be hosting Bayou Bend Family Day “Hispanic Heritage” on Sunday, Sept. 16 (click here for details). National Hispanic Heritage Month falls during the anniversaries of independence for several Latin American countries — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico’s independence is September 16.

We Are More Alike Than Different

Hispanic and Latino-Americans can have European, African, Asian and indigenous ancestry. The District encourages everyone to learn about the various cultures, customs, traditions and history of Hispanics.
