Aldine ISD Families Mark Your Calendar: The Next ‘Active Parent University’ Session is Set for March 20

The APU initiative connects parents to District and community resources. The program also teaches parents how to be involved in their children’s education as well as how to improve parent-child communication.

Now in its third year, Active Parent University introduces families to Aldine ISD programs and connects them to community partners. Active Parent University is a community collaborative led by the District’s Title 1 Department to help parents become full partners in their children’s education. The objective is to equip families with new skills, knowledge, and resources to increase their children’s academic success.

According to LaTashia L. Abrams, Active Parent University (APU), which is a Title 1 initiative, offers families a “crash course” in how to be involved in their children’s education. Abrams coordinates APU sessions with fellow Title 1 Program Directors Alonda Jacks-Moorehead and Nancy Gauthier.

“Active Parent University was designed based on the understanding that parents and community are an essential component in educating our children,” said Abrams. “Classes touch on a variety of subjects, including parent–engagement strategies. We want to increase parent involvement in the schools and empower parents to raise children who are successful in school and in life.”

Why Be Involved?

Research has shown that parents can increase a child’s academic success through their involvement with schools and communities. Parental involvement improves student morale, attitudes, and academic achievement across all subject areas. Abrams encourages legal guardians and grandparents raising kids to attend Active Parent University.

Dr. Tyrone Tanner

Tyrone Tanner, Ed.D., is a professor of education at Prairie View A&M University and founder of Educational Concepts, LLC. He has authored numerous books and articles focused on building community-school partnerships; best practices in parenting; and effective teaching practices that lead to the success of all learners.

As a consultant, Tanner has facilitated evidence-based workshops for more than 200,000 educators, parents, and community stakeholders across the United States.

Prior to becoming a university professor, Tanner served as a middle and high school teacher, principal and central office school administrator. His research and philosophy are firmly rooted in the belief that all students can learn and if provided a culturally responsive environment they can learn with exceptionality.

His topics center on how to build children’s resilience and how they can deal with bullies.

Parental involvement is a crucial factor during the school life of children, especially in primary and middle school grade levels. Scientists found that parental involvement can affect children’s academic progress, behavior, language abilities, social skills and attitude toward life.

Who: Open to all Aldine ISD parents, legal guardians, grandparents raising a child between the ages of five (5) and 18. The classes are also open to staff members.

Where: All classes will take place at Aldine ISD M.B. “Sonny” Donaldson Child Nutrition Center, 1802 Aldine Bender (Houston, TX 77032). This is a central location in the District.

Languages: All sessions will offer a simultaneous presentation in English and Spanish (español).
