Aldine ISD Schools Celebrate World Read Aloud Day

World Read Aloud Day is celebrated annually to promote the importance of reading and sharing stories. This year World Read Aloud Day falls on Wednesday, February 5. Aldine ISD schools will be celebrating February 3-7. World Read Aloud Day challenges participants to pick up a book, find an audience, and read aloud. This effort is currently celebrated in over 173 countries. 

Aldine ISD schools have partnered with district staff, community members, and local businesses and organizations for World Read Aloud Day. Throughout the week our students will have guest readers in their classrooms or campus library. 

In the fall, Aldine ISD kicked off a new literacy program using the American Reading Company® literacy resources and framework. The current focus is on early phonics instruction and complex text while maintaining a balanced literacy structure. In addition to third-grade reading levels, the district seeks to increase eighth-grade reading proficiency to increase readiness for high school. Studies show that students who read on grade level by the end of the third grade are more likely to succeed in school and their future careers.

This initiative is driven by the district’s new strategic plan, A New Way Forward, which address student achievement. The literacy initiative includes providing quality resources and improving support for instruction to build strong literacy foundations.
