Virtual Ceremony for District Winners of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Contest Set for Feb. 4

Hundreds of students in grades K-12 will submit western-themed art.

María Zavala’s artwork “Stockyard” won Best of Show in the High School Division for the 2016 competition. The Nimitz HS grad is a current student at Texas A&M University.

The district will host a Virtual Awards Ceremony for student winners of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo (HLSR) School Art Contest on Thursday, February 4, 2021, starting at 7 p.m. The YouTube Premiere recording will be from the M.O. Campbell Educational Center. Families can view the virtual ceremony on Aldine TV.

Aldine ISD, like many other school districts, hosts district-level competitions each year. The HLSR Show’s School Art Committee visits school districts in the Houston area to judge. The district-level winners and students advancing to the HLSR competition will be announced on February 4.

Each entry receives a red, white, or blue ribbon. Judges select the Best of Show, Gold Medal, and Special Merit Awards from the blue-ribbon group. Judges choose winners in elementary, junior high, and high school levels. All work by high school participants is eligible for the Show’s School Art Auction. The HLSR recently rescheduled their event from March to May 2021.

Kaileigh Newman invites families, staff, and community members to join the virtual ceremony to support AISD students. Newman, director of visual arts, is hosting the event.

HLSR will hold an Awards Ceremony in March. Read below for important due dates and other information for district-level competitions. 

Aldine ISD HLSR School Art Submissions (K-12)

• Artwork Due Date: Monday, January 4, 2021
• Where: Bamberg Resources & Staff Development Center
• Art Teachers: A minimum of five (5) physical entries must be submitted to the Director of Visual Arts from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Individuals submitting artwork will fill out a sign-up sheet.
• Forms: Art teachers, please email Director Kaileigh Newman for the required documents.
• Purpose: Rodeo art has a long-standing tradition for the Aldine community to celebrate our student artists. Teachers facilitate learning for students to create an original piece of artwork that represents a Western theme. 
• Rules: Students may use a reference photograph that they or their teacher took. For additional regulations per grade level artwork, visit the Visual Arts Department webpage, then go to the Downloads link and click on the Contest Documentation folder. The artwork must be matted, and the minimum mat is 11″ x 14″, and the maximum size is 18″ X 24″ inches. Students should be inspired to create an innovative composition to evoke the viewer’s emotions through landscapes, portraits, animals, etc.

FFA Artwork for Aldine ISD Livestock Show & Artwork Auction

The Future Farmers of  America (FFA) competition artwork is also due on January 4, 20201. Auction submissions must be for high school only, and all physical artwork submitted must be 18″ x 24″ inches. The Virtual Aldine ISD Livestock Show & Artwork Auction will take place on Friday, January 29. The district will share more details as the event draws closer.
