Lillian ‘Leigh’ McNeil, Midwest Region 3 director for the Office of Admissions with the United States Naval Academy, will host a share an Admissions Forum set for Thursday, September 23 in Houston.

Summer STEM Opportunities for Students in Grades 8, 9 and 10

The USNA offers a world-class Summer STEM Program, an excellent opportunity for students thinking of a career as a coder, game developer, designer, robotics engineer, and more. According to McNeil, USNA offers a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) camp for current 8th, 9th, and 10th graders. Campers will work with students from all over the country, testing their problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration skills.

USNA Summer Seminar — Students Currently in Junior Year of HS

The United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar is the first step for students in navigating their future to becoming one of the nation’s next generation of leaders. Students currently in their junior year of high school who are considering the Naval Academy as their college of choice are strongly recommended to consider applying to the Summer Seminar. The experience will introduce students to life at the Academy, where they will experience first-class academic, athletic, and professional training. Their Summer Seminar application will also serve as a preliminary application to the Academy that they will complete before or during their senior year. The high school juniors will learn from some of the U.S. Naval Academy’s best midshipmen and most esteemed faculty.

What About Costs? Travel?

McNeil shared that financial aid is available for fees and travel for the Summer STEM and Summer Seminar programs. USNA would fly the students from Houston to Baltimore and pick them up at the airport; USNA would reverse the process to get them home. For the STEM campers (who are younger), USNA has a special agreement with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to pick the campers up at their respective gates. Because some STEM campers may have never flown before, USNA doesn’t let the STEM campers navigate an unfamiliar airport alone.
