Carver High School Theater Troupe Earns 3 Tommy Tune Nominations for ‘Cinderella’

The annual awards spotlight students’ talents, with well-known Broadway theater vets participating in the celebration.

Theater Under the Stars (TUTS) recently announced the 2022 Tommy Tune Awards nominations. The members of Carver High School for Engineering, Applied Technology, and the Arts theater troupe are thrilled. The school’s spring production of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella earned three Tommy Tune nominations.

The Tommy Tune Awards Program celebrates the educational value, artistry, and community of high school musical theatre in the Greater Houston area. After evaluating the 42 participating Houston-area high school productions during the 2021-2022 school year, a team of Houston-based theatre professionals nominated students in 15 award categories.

Carver HS received three Supporting Role nominations.

2022 Tommy Tune Award Nominations for AISD

• Supporting Role: Cheyenne Willis-Bumper (12th grade) as Stepsister Grace in Cinderella
• Supporting Role: Ryan Randolph (11th grade) as Stepsister Joy in Cinderella
• Supporting Role: Nadia Noble (12th grade) as Queen Constantina in Cinderella

The supporting role nominees will perform a medley in the Virtual Tommy Tune Awards Ceremony that will premiere on May 27 at 7 p.m. on TUTS social media platforms — Facebook Page and YouTube Channel — at 7 p.m.

The Carver production had students from Anderson Academy, Drew Academy, and Houston Academy form part of the ensemble. Theater Director Roshunda Jones and Technical Director Jabari Collins thank everyone who formed part of the production. Alumnus Denzel Taylor was the choreographer. Theater volunteers Pamela Dickson and Carol Stone served as the musical director and assistant musical theater director, respectively. The vocal coach was Kenyatta Herring. Instructors Carlos Quiroz and Gabriella Garces led the the orchestra.

The Carver HS theater, under the direction of Jones and Collins, began to have their theater students compete in the Tommy Tune Awards program in 2008. To date, Carver has earned a total of 88 nominations.

Additionally, TUTS awards scholarships to graduating seniors who plan to pursue a career in the arts.

The Tommy Tune Awards offers an opportunity for students and educators to share their creative accomplishments while instilling in young people the value of engaging in the performing arts as a lifelong pursuit.

The Tommy Tune Awards are named for Broadway legend, a Houston native, and Lamar High School alumnus Tommy Tune. A performer, director, and choreographer with more than 50 years of stage experience, Tune received nine Tony Awards in the following productions: Seesaw, My One and Only, A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine, Nine, Grand Hotel, and The Will Rogers Follies. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2003 by President Bush.
