Aldine ISD Remembers the Legacy of Kitty Spence, Beloved Educator and School Namesake

The distrtict mourns the passing of Novis “Kitty” (Eddings) Spence, a lifelong educator and namesake of Spence Elementary School, who died on September 8, 2025, in Huntsville, Texas. She was 93. Kitty was known for her kindness, which endeared her to all who knew her.

Born on January 9, 1932, in Nacogdoches County, Kitty moved with her family to Houston in 1937 and attended Aldine schools. After graduating from the University of Houston in 1952, she began her teaching career in Aldine ISD, where she dedicated her entire life to students and education, inspiring many along the way.

In 1954, Kitty married fellow Aldine educator Richard D. Spence. Together, they raised three children and served the Aldine community for decades. Their joint commitment to education was not only recognized but also celebrated in 2005 when the district opened Spence Elementary School, ensuring their legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

“Mrs. Spence represents the very best of Aldine ISD’s history and heart,” said Aldine ISD Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney. “As educators, we honor her through our unwavering commitment to students, families, and the belief that education changes lives.”

Kitty is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Richard. She is survived by her sisters, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who remember her as a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

The family has expressed deep gratitude to caregiver Glenda Brent and the staff at Creekside Retirement Center for their devoted care and support during Kitty’s final years.

Services

Services will be held on Friday, September 12, at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville. A private family viewing will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by a public visitation at 10:00 a.m. and the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will follow at Brooke Cemetery.
