Nimitz High Art Student Wins National American Vision Award

Nimitz High student Jazzman Washington’s sculptor, which earned a Gold Key at the regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition, has been named a recipient of the National American Vision Award.

Each year regional affiliates select and nominate Gold Key artworks for the award that demonstrate exceptional technique and unique personal expression. Harris County Department of Education (HCDE), which sponsors the regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition, selected Jazzman’s Gold Key artwork as well as four others to vie for the National American Vision Award.

Jazzman and other National American Vision Award recipients from across the country will be recognized in New York City.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards has an impressive legacy dating back to 1923. The awards have become the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for creative young artists and writers. A noteworthy roster of past winners includes Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, John Updike, and many more.
