Aldine ISD’s School Assistant Superintendent (SAS) of Middle School LaTonia Amerson was one of two school administrators in Texas awarded the Johnny L. Veselka Scholarship, presented by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA).
The Veselka Scholarship, which has been awarded annually since 2014, is awarded to outstanding doctoral students pursuing careers in educational leadership, emphasizing the superintendency.
Amerson and Sharon McKinney, superintendent of Port Aransas ISD, were selected from among a pool of applicants by the TASA Johnny L. Veselka Scholarship Committee, a group of Texas school superintendents and other public school district administrators.
Amerson and McKinney will each receive a $2,500 scholarship, and both will be recognized during the 2022 TASA Midwinter Conference, held in Austin Jan. 30-Feb. 2.
Amerson is working toward her doctorate in educational leadership at Sam Houston State University.
“School leaders must be relentless in the pursuit of what is best for all students,” Amerson said in her application. “You have to be willing to work in the trenches with the team, build relationships with everyone, lead and treat others respectfully, and be driven by improved student outcomes, not by a title.”
