3 AISD Campuses Make Best High Schools in U.S. 2014 Rankings

Victory Early College HS student wins third place at Premed Research Symposium.

U.S. News & World Report released the Best High School rankings on April 22. In Aldine ISD, three campuses made the 2014 rankings. Victory Early College High School received a Gold medal. Carver High School received a Silver medal and Eisenhower High School earned a Bronze medal.

The [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Best High Schools rankings are available online only. U.S. News produced the rankings in conjunction with the American Institutes for Research.

U.S. News has published detailed information on more than 19,400 public high schools. The magazine used data and a comprehensive method to give schools a College Readiness Index (CRI) score. The top-scoring 4,707 schools received a gold, silver or bronze medal. In the case of gold and silver schools, U.S. News gave a numerical ranking.

U.S. News also released new statewide rankings. Also new this year are Best Charter Schools, Best Magnet Schools and Best STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Schools.

The magazine analyzed 31,242 public schools throughout the U.S. It reduced the number to 19,411. This is the total number of public high schools with enough 12th-grade enrollments. And they had enough data from the 2011-2012 school year to be eligible for the rankings. U.S. News determined the degree to which schools prepared students for college-level work. The method analyzed student success in Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. Both of these include college-level courses.

There are more than 300 Texas schools in the 2014 U.S. News Best High School rankings.

In AISD, Victory Early College High School earned a Gold medal for a second year in a row. The campus ranked #199 in the nation and #28 in the state. After earning Silver in the 2013 rankings, Carver High School again receives a Silver medal this year. Carver High ranked #993 in the nation, #100 in the state, and #160 in the Magnet ranking. Eisenhower High School again made the rankings with a Bronze medal.

Eisenhower High School student received a Silver Key for his writing at the 2014 Regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards event.

AISD campuses have fared well in the U.S. News rankings. Aldine High School and MacArthur High School earned Silver Awards in the [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]2013 and [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]2012 Rankings. Carver High earned a Bronze in 2007. Both Carver High and MacArthur Senior earned Bronze medals in 2008. In the 2009 rankings, Carver High received a Silver Medal while MacArthur High earned a Bronze medal. In 2012, Nimitz Senior High School and Eisenhower Senior High School received Bronze medals.

Gold Medals went to schools with the highest CRI values. Only 15 high schools across the nation achieved a CRI of 100. Silver medals went to 1,519 high schools with the next highest CRI. U.S News awarded 2,688 high schools with Bronze medals. A Bronze Medal school passed the first two steps of the method used to rank. Bronze medal schools either don’t offer AP or IB courses, or its CRI fell short of the median (18.17) for U.S. News to award Silver medals.
