Dr. José Zelaya Speaks at Aldine Community Partners and Superintendent Parent Advisory Committee Joint Meeting

On Wednesday, March 2, the Aldine ISD Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Department hosted a joint meeting for Aldine Community Partners and the Superintendent-Parent Advisory Committee.

The session featured the keynote speaker Dr. José Luis Zelaya, an immigrant, and first-generation college student. Zelaya talked about the challenges he faced as a student. Later, many in the audience had the opportunity to share how much they connected to his moving story.

Zelaya works with Texas A&M University’s Center for Urban School Partnership and is the CEO of Dr. Zelaya Educational Consulting. His company serves emergent bilingual students, newcomers, long-term English learners (ELs), and college-bound scholars. Zelaya is passionate about sharing the generational power of higher education and highlighting the importance of systems of support through his personal story, which has been His message has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, CNN, The Washington Post, Univisión, Fox News, and The New York Times.

Superintendent Dr. Latonya M. Goffney and the Executive Leadership Team members were also in attendance and had the opportunity to communicate district updates and answer questions from parents.

Earlier this school year, the Multilingual Programs Department launched a six-part Parent Leadership Academy. Zelaya was one of the speakers highlighting how parents can empower their students’ academic achievement and social-emotional well-being.
