Family and Community University Opens Registration: Building Stronger Families, Stronger Futures

Parents and caregivers across Aldine ISD will soon have the chance to build new skills, strengthen family bonds, and open doors to new opportunities — all through the Aldine ISD Family and Community University (FCU).

Now in its fifth year, FCU offers courses designed to support family well-being, home learning, and stronger connections with schools — all in support of student success.

“At Aldine ISD, we believe that when families and schools work together, students thrive,” said LaTashia Abrams, executive director of the district’s Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Department. “The AISD Family and Community University helps us build those partnerships in meaningful ways.”

A Variety of Learning Opportunities

This year’s program features up to three virtual morning sessions each week on engaging topics, as well as a monthly in-person evening session. The schedule is designed to respect the demands of family life while ensuring that all participants have flexible and accessible options for continued growth and support. 

Language and civic growth are at the heart of FCU. Families can take English as a Second Language (ESL) and Spanish classes — especially valuable for parents with children in dual language programs. The university also offers a pathway to U.S. citizenship and test preparation courses through a partnership with Bonding Against Adversity, equipping families with the tools to grow personally while supporting their children’s education. 

Proven Impact

Since its launch, FCU has made a lasting impact in Aldine ISD. Many parents who began as students in the program have gone on to become district employees, further strengthening the connection between home, school, and community.

“We are inspired by our mission to empower and engage families to become stronger advocates for their children,” said Iván Tamayo, a FACE specialist. “I urge parents and family caregivers to join us in this journey towards a brighter future for our community.”
