A Taste of Asia at Carmichael

On January 23rd, Carmichael Elementary held an Asian Heritage event. The program consisted of students performing a fashion show, which displayed costumes from different Asian countries. The event was sponsored by the Music Family Institute who also provided most of the outfits. First grade students performed a Vietnamese ethnic group dance, and second graders performed a lion dance in honor of Lunar New Year.

In addition to the second graders, Mr. Johnson and Ms. Nguyen, took part in the festivities as they danced in costume with the students.

The audiences consisted mostly of parents and students. Nguyen Dat Thinh, a well-known journalist in the Vietnamese media, and Tri Tran, a photographer from Thoi Bao magazine visited as special guests for the program. They are going to write a story about the event in the next issue of the magazine.

Teachers and staff were treated to cultural foods sponsored by Panda Express and Carmichael Elementary parents. McDonald’s also donated cookies, pies, silverware, and drinks.

During the week, each classroom was decorated with information about a specific country in Asia. Students walked by and viewed the displays. The purpose of the program was to educate students, teachers, and the community about the different Asian cultures and to promote understanding, peace and unity.
