Over 600 Volunteers Participate in AISD’s Reach Out to Dropouts Walk

Hundreds of volunteers spent September 8 knocking on more than 576 doors across the school district encouraging students who have not returned to school this academic year to re-enroll. The outreach effort led to 21 AISD students deciding to return to school immediately and 50 committed to re-enroll.

AISD Board Education Trustee Steve Mead and MacArthur Senior High School Principal Nancy Blackwell were among the many volunteers encouraging students to complete their high school education.

“There are many factors that drive students to make the difficult decision of dropping out of school,” said Mead. “That’s why we’re here this morning to let them know about the various programs —traditional and non-traditional — AISD offers to help them graduate.  We also want them to know AISD cares about them and wants to help them get back in school.”

“The annual Reach Out to Dropouts Walk is a great opportunity for the district and the community to reach out to these students to help them get their diploma,” Blackwell said.  “We are here to let them know that AISD is going to do whatever it can to help them succeed.”

Blackwell is passionate about seeing students graduate from school.

“We know this community and understand the challenges many of our students and their families face,” she added.  “We also realize that school is these students’ best chance to succeed. It is in the campuses that we can work to encourage students to find success and to encourage them to pursue higher education or vocational training so they can move up the economic ladder and thus provide themselves and their families with a better life.”

Some very excited volunteers from García-Leza EC/PK Center pose for a picture with Principal Juan Santos. In the featured image at the top of the article, a group of volunteers are pictured with a student (in stripped shirt) who decided to re-enroll in school. Also pictured (wearing red, l-r) are AISD Board of Trustee Steve Mead and Margarita Byrum, AISD director of human resources.
