Hoffman Middle Students Create Arboretum

The Science Department at Hoffman Middle School is the proud recipient of a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant. Lowe’s Toolbox for Education provided $5,000 worth of materials to begin a school arboretum. The garden, which will provide the campus with an area to study ecology, will consist of various species of desert and rainforest plants. The arboretum will also have a butterfly garden as well as a gazebo and several benches.

The students of Hoffman Middle’s Science Club have been involved in the beginning stages of the garden. They have placed rocks to landscape, worked the soil and mulch, and planted various plants and bushes.

Currently, the students are working with teacher Richard Houdek on wood projects for the garden during Zero Hour Technology Enrichment Class. Under Houdek, the students assisting with the garden project are learning to work safely with power tools.

The Science Club is also learning to care for the plants by making sure the plants are watered as well as ensuring each plant has a root stimulator and are fertilized.

The Science Department is working hard to ensure that the arboretum is not only beautiful to enjoy but also educational. The arboretum will provide the campus a unique learning environment for both teachers and students.
