Hambrick Middle School celebrated Generation Texas Week with a variety of activities designed to help students and parents learn more about higher education opportunities.
Representatives from Lone Star College and DeVry University visited the school and spoke with students during their lunch periods about the importance of college. They also explained how to qualify and apply for scholarships.
During an evening event, Dream Team students from Carver High School and Victory Early College spoke with parents and students about their experiences in high school and how they are preparing for their transition to college. Hambrick Middle School students and their parents enjoyed talking to Dream Team members individually, having their questions answered about the two magnet school programs as well as receiving information about scholarships and financial aid.
The week ended with a themed writing contest about how college will make a difference in the students’ lives. First place drew a tie between Denisse Córdova for her essay and Beatriz Cabrera for her poem. Lisa Martínez and David Treviño won second and third place, respectively. All the winners received a movie gift card and a backpack from DeVry University.
Honorable mentions included Itzel Ramírez, Amy Paniagua, Deisi Duarte, Jenisha Patel, Mariano García, Jason Contreras, Juana Espinoza, Eric Servin, Jailene Figueroa, and Gisselle Manríquez. They all received T-shirts from Lone Star College and DeVry University.
Generation Texas Week, formerly known as Education: Go Get It Week, is part of a statewide effort to promote and inform students about the importance of higher education.
