First Snack and Yak at Eisenhower High a Success

Ann Schleeter at Eisenhower High School received a $1,500 literacy grant from Dollar General earlier this year. She bought several sets of young adult novels for Ike students. On November 27, the program had a great turn out for the first meeting of the Snack and Yak book club. Thirty-two students comprised of mostly sophomores, whom stayed after school to discuss the first book, Fault in Our Stars by John Green.

They had a wonderful, lively time discussing the book. Several teachers and administrators — Angela Ford-Robinson, Derek Baumann, Assistant Principal Pertricia Ross, Heather Lyon-Southard, Amber McMunn, Ronnie Nicks, Principal Ben Ibarra, Assistant Principal Harriett Hashem and Brandon Smith — helped make the first Snack and Yak of the year a big success and let the students know how important it is to make reading literature a daily part of their lives.

The book club is proving a big hit with students. The next meeting occurred on December 18 in the library with 48 students in attendance. Participants discussed Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher.
