Eisenhower Ninth Students Study Identity Through Self-Portraiture

Art students at Eisenhower Ninth Grade School investigated the concept of identity by studying the works of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and creating self-portraits in class. Kaileigh Rosplohowski, art teacher, dressed up as Frida Kahlo to inspire students and review how Kahlo impacted the art world. Rosplohowski had students create self-portraits that expressed who they are through the use of symbolism. In preparation for their self-portraits and understanding symbolism, students created visual representations of the poem “Never Shall I Forget,” from the novel “Night” written by Elie Wiesel, which they were reading in English.
