Wilson Intermediate Celebrates National Family Literacy Day

The National Center for Family Literacy recognized November 1, 2012 as National Family Literacy Day. To celebrate, teachers Chelisa Lacy, Jawan Moore, Fran Nwoko, Shamyia Lee and Teneka Cook along with student teacher Gregory Castille facilitated a book parade. While parents watched, students dressed as the favorite book characters paraded through the main courtyard. A few students provided 30-second “commercials” about their book. The highlight of the event occurred when four students shared information about their literary selections. Anthony Christopher discussed, The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan, Amy Avilés talked about Purplicious by Elizabeth Kann and Victoria Kann, Sydnei Richard elaborated about the main character, Dorothy, from The Wizard of Oz by Frank Baum, and Ariana Rojas chatted about the main character from Green Princess Saves the Day by Alyssa Crowne. Amongst all the villains, princesses and wimpy kids, everyone enjoyed dressing up and sharing their favorite characters. Wilson students (front, center l-r) Kiersten Stewart, Avilés, Rojas, and Christopher (far right) along with student teacher Castille are pictured in the image above. To conclude the event, parents and students could also participate in the school’s book drive by donating new or gently used books to be given on to kids in support of National Family Literacy Day.
