Aguilar Named Spelling Bee Champion at Harris Academy

Sixteen boys and girls participated in the 14th Annual Harris Academy Spelling Bee. Students who had spent many weeks practicing their words and going through practice bees with Dixie Allen, literacy specialist, finally had the chance to put their spelling skills to the test recently. One by one the students approached the microphone and listened for their word from Allen, who served as the bee’s caller. After 15 exciting rounds of spelling, Ángel Aguilar, a fourth grade student, was named the Campus Spelling Bee Champion. Third-grader Diego Medina was named the runner-up. Pictured with Aguilar (l-r) are this year’s judges Dr. Alton Smith, Aldine ISD school board member; Principal Innetta Carter, and Dr. Christine VanHamersveld, AISD program director for library services. Aguilar will compete at the District Spelling Bee set Tues., Feb. 12 at the M.O. Campbell Educational Center. Campus administrators and staff members are grateful to the parents, teachers, and classmates of all the participating students for their incredible support and attendance at the Campus Spelling Bee.
