AISD K-9 Unit Featured on Nat Geo WILD Series

Aldine ISD K-9 officers Tony Nichols and Mike Gerald, along with their police dogs Ace and Smafu, will be featured on the Nat Geo WILD series “Alpha Dogs,” on Friday, Feb. 22.

This week’s episode titled, “Busted,” will air at 8 p.m. on Comcast channel 676.

The 30-minute episode will feature officers Nichols and Gerald, along with other law enforcement personnel, who traveled to Vohne Liche Kennel in Denver, Indiana in June of 2012 to select their K-9s. Indiana’s Vohne Liche Kennels is one of the largest police-dog training facilities in the country.

Ace is a black Labrador Retriever, while Smafu is a Belgian Malinois. Both dogs were obtained from the K9s4Cops program, a non-profit foundation whose mission is to ensure that every law enforcement officer in need of a K9 has one at their side, well trained and ready for action.

Ace and Smafu perform drug searches at Aldine schools during the school year.

According to a press release, “Alpha Dogs” focuses on highly trained dog heroes that have muscle and smarts. Viewers will see the incredible drills and exercises the dogs undergo, follow the instruction process with their dedicated trainers who carry top security clearances, see the application in the field for military and police units, and even watch the fun they have playing fetch on their days off.
